Urban Memory

 When I saw a video of the ruined city in Ukraine, it reminded me of the picture of the Bombing of Tokyo during the World War II. Tokyo was completely devastated. I looked back at those photos, and I saw Tokyo in modern times again. This big city that I saw through the camera lens, was like a diorama. Peace is more sensitive and more fragile than I think. As the  memories of Tokyo’s burnt earth fade away, the awareness for peace may be lost as well. It’s somewhat ironic that the image of war causes people to think about the importance of peace.

 廃墟と化したウクライナの街の映像を見たとき、私は第2次世界大戦の東京大空襲の写真を思い出した。一面焼け野原になった東京をもう一度見直しながら、現在の東京を見ると、それはまるでジオラマ模型のような世界だった。平和とは思っていた以上に繊細でもろい。しかし、その意識は東京が焦土と化した記憶が遠のくのに比例して薄れていく。皮肉だが、戦火の映像が平和の大切さを届けている。
